HAPPY VENUNAAD YEAR

KNOWLEDGE SHEET : SEVEN LEVELS OF EXISTENCE

There are seven levels of existence: the (physical) body, the breath, the mind, the intellect, the memory, the ego and the self.

Is your mind here at this moment? Are you all here? Are you listening attentively to what I am saying? Or is your mind wandering somewhere else?

Your mind must be present here, right now. The faculty that helps you hear, see, taste, smell and touch is the mind. Then comes the Intellect.

The intellect is the faculty that helps us decide whether something we hear is nice or not; whether something we taste is to our liking or not.

Then come the memory or Chitta. It is that faculty that helps us remember all that we perceive and understand through our senses and the intellect. Events leave their impressions on the Chitta.
Then comes the ego, and finally the soul or the self. If we gain a little deeper understanding of these seven faculties of our existence, then it can bring about a great transformation in our lives. And this is what The Art of Living is all about. When you gain this knowledge about the levels of your existence, then you start blossoming with joy from within.

CHANGING TIME, UNCHANGING WITNESS - SRI SRI

A new year is the time when a lot of people stumble at the realization, "Oh! Another year has gone by!" We wonder for a few moments at the current of time that flows by and then again get busy.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

WITH SRI SRI

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: Tomorrow a New Year commences. Please tell us something on New Year celebrations.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The time on this planet for us is a gift. When we consider time as a gift, our whole outlook towards life shifts. Like every year, this year also has offered you many gifts. With its thorns, it has made you strong; with its petals, it has given you joy. Any event has the good and not-so-good aspect. The not-so-good part has made you strong and helped you realize that you can handle it. The good part gives you peace and tranquillity. This last hour is good to reflect how you welcomed the year when it came and how it swept you and swirled you and passed you on to the New Year. Through all this time we learnt one lesson - we should never compromise on human values. Love, compassion, sense of gratefulness and a vision for everyone has to dawn in our life.
Let us celebrate with this one intention that let's bring home (Spiritual) Knowledge to everyone - that life, events are impermanent. What is permanent is our spirit, our consciousness. It has no birth and death. Life at a higher plane is eternal. So celebrate every moment knowing that every moment is a gift to us.
Get this. When celebration becomes service, there is no guilt. And when service becomes celebration, there is no pride. It is easy to get swept away in a negative mode. It takes courage to move out of it. I am sure all those who are here have this capacity. And all those who are reading this also have that capacity!

RELIGION

Real Conversion Is what happens within

The purpose of religion is to bring enlightenment to the individual, happiness in society and to move from limited individual identity to universality and communion with the Divine. At their core, all religions have wisdom and human values which are universal. Customs and traditions were moulded by people and their way of life at the time; that is why they are diverse. In terms of their origin, all religions are expressions of divine inspiration.

The whole idea of converting from one religion to another comes from a very narrow mindset — that one is better than the other. We need to see things from a broader perspective. Just like different flowers come up and blossom in different places according to their climate, different religions arose according to the need of the time and place throughout history. Similarly, just as a flower gives its fragrance to everyone equally, the wisdom in this world, from whichever religion it may be, does not belong only to one community; it is the collective heritage of the whole of humanity. Jesus' message, Buddha's teaching, the knowledge of yoga and meditation are relevant and beneficial to anybody in the world.

Converting religion does not bring salvation. The notion that you will be closer to God by changing religion is baseless. You get closer to God by feeling connected, internally. Inner transformation is real conversion. If you really want to convert, convert from violence and frustration to a loving and peaceful space within. Religions of the far east —  Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Shintoism, Taoism — always existed in harmony. Their main goal was uplifting consciousness and giving knowledge. Nobody told people that their way was the only way and everybody else would go to hell. In fact, people who think they hold the key to heaven create hell for everybody. Due to the cultural diversity in India, religion and regionalism has been a significant factor in politics. Luring poor people to converting by tempting them with money and other short-term benefits is an act of exploitation and is only done for ulterior political motives. However, people are realising these sinister designs.

We need to educate people to take pride in whichever religion they belong to while honouring other religions; to broaden vision and deepen roots. This can be done by introducing multicultural, multireligious elements in education. If children grow up knowing a bit about all religions, they develop a sense of respect and belongingness with them. They do not grow up to be fanatics thinking that their religion is superior and others need to be 'liberated' and converted.

Our foremost identity is that we belong to One Divinity; we are all part of one human family. Then come these identities of gender, nationality and in the end, religion. Conflict arises when instead of identifying with Divinity, we identify with divisions. This sense of identity with humanness should prevail among all other identities. If we are able to focus on this universality, establish this sense of Oneness, then we would have achieved something great in this century. At a time like this when religious polarisation is driving people apart, all that the world needs is love and understanding.

KNOWLEDGE SHEET : GIVE PEACE TO OTHERS

Give peace to others-We have said, 'Vasudaiva Kutumbakam' (one world family). We have accepted the whole world as our family. Then you should rise up to that idea. Feel at home with anybody and everybody. Don't just focus on what is comfortable for you and what is not comfortable. You should get out of your comfort zone and bring comfort to others. This is most important.

See as to how many people are comfortable with you. You can do a survey about yourself and see how many people you make happy and comfortable? If you dislike people, you will find you are not friendly.

As we expand, we become friendly with people of different natures and different parts of the world. Sometimes, we feeling comfortable with people of our own state or country or religion. Here you have to mix with everybody. We have people of different faiths all here, Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs. We have people from every state of India, right from the Northeast to Kerala, and right from Jammu to Tamil Nadu. We also have people from all over the world and everyone has their own mannerisms and food habits. So you need to learn and bring comfort to others. You have had enough peace, now it's better you give peace to others.

DAILY SUTRA

Celebration is the nature of the spirit. Any celebration has to be spiritual. A celebration without spirituality does not have any depth. And silence gives the depth to celebration. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

GURU ONE LINERS

Q: How can I always stay in Sakshi Bhaav (witness state)?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Drop (the word) 'always'. When it is possible, stay in Sakshi Bhaav, that is enough. It is (the word) 'always' that creates complications.

SRI SRI'S MESSAGE ON CHRISTMAS EVE

Wed, 24/12/2014 Bad Antogast, Germany

Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round you virgin, mother and child
Holy infant, tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Christmas Celebrations bring Lights, Joy and Love at that time of the year when Nature is still and silent.
This symbolizes that the message of Love springs forth when the mind goes within in stillness.

When the crying and dependent Child (Little Mind) rests in the lap of the Mother (Big Mind or the Universal Self), that is Heavenly Peace or Meditation.
This is the Eternal Message of Christmas.

There is much to be done to spread waves of Peace & Happiness, the real gifts of Christmas! Let us share these gifts with the world!

Love & Blessings!

GURU PUNCH

Through meditation, we can enhance our skill and capacity to receive knowledge. And when we lead such a good life, then we become useful for ourselves and also for everyone around us. Life, when nourished by knowledge becomes helpful, both to oneself and to others around." - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS & NEWYEAR WITH SRI SRI

SRI SRI AT GERMANY

SRI SRI SATSANG

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Satsang today

"Is compassion essential for a saint to have? If you have a wound on your hand will you show compassion or sympathy for your own hand? No. In the same way some saints may not show compassion but they are steadfast in knowledge that there is no two. Compassion is colour of love. It is not necessary that the same colour is displayed by all. Love is always there, but compassion is only one of the expressions of love. And it not necessary that it is expressed by all. Because if a person is established in the knowledge of non-duality then he doesn't have compassion in them. See there are two types of people who do not show any compassion. One who is has a cruel heart, filled with stress and hatred, tamasic in nature. And the other is one who is established in the knowledge of non-duality. One who doesn't see anyone as separate from himself, he too does not have any compassion. Compassion means there has to be two, one can never show compassion or sympathy on oneself.  For compassion or sympathy you need two. Of course, that doesn't mean you it an excuse for your insensitivity!

You know you will find a thousand opportunities to doubt if a person is good or not. There will be a thousand doubts that will rise within you that will cause you to think of someone as wrong. But rising above these thousand doubts is true connection, that which is beyond the intellect. Doubt always comes up in the intellect. But when the connection is established at the level of the soul then even if the intellect brings forth a thousand reasons to show you that this person is wrong, the soul does not listen to it. Then it stays. Confidence in someone is a matter of the soul, the Self. That's why you say self-confidence. That means confidence in one's own self. But confidence itself comes from the Self. Doubt is form the intellect. So when the confidence, the faith is established, then the intellect brings forth many doubts to test the faith. Sometimes you feel doubtful, you will feel low but somewhere the confidence will stand its ground, which will tell you what the truth is, what is right.

There was a saint who did not have any compassion. He was irritated by the word compassion! He believed that everyone was suffering because of their own karmas. That was his thought process. No matter what goes on, on the outside, inside you always know what is right. For example, sometimes no matter what a person says or does, somewhere inside you know that he is right or wrong. That ability to differentiate between right and wrong is there inside us, which is beyond behaviour, thought process, beyond a person. When we are connected to a person beyond their behaviour, their thinking, that is faith. And is that faith comes into your life then rest everything else falls into place!"

Ques: How can we always be established in non-duality?

#SriSriNo don't always tried to be established in non-duality. Your outer behaviour has to be on the basis of duality. You cannot move forward without that. Use duality in your outer behaviour and be established in non-duality in meditation, in rest. Whenever your mind is agitated, rest in non-duality. Non-duality in meditation, puja but duality in behaviour. Else it will be problematic, if you start thinking your wallet and someone else's wallet is the same! You will also be in trouble and the other too! So keep duality in your day to day life but you need non-duality when you meditate, in knowledge. You cannot progress in knowledge without non-duality. You cannot reach the ultimate love, the ultimate devotion without non-duality.

KNOWLEDGE SHEET(SUBJECT): DISCIPLE OR COMPANION

Are you a Disciple or Companion?

Knowledge has an end. Knowledge completes. So also does discipleship. For the disciple is aimed at acquiring Knowledge.

Once you cross the water, however nice the boat is, you get off the boat. After twelve years, the disciple completes his studies. The master does a ceremony called Samavartha, where he tells the disciple that he is ending the discipleship and asking him to behave at par with him, and let the Brahman dynamically manifest.

Sakha is a companion in life and death; it never ends. In the path of love there is neither beginning nor end. Sakha only wants the beloved. He doesn't care about the Knowledge or liberation. Love is incomplete because of longing. And so it is infinite, for infinity can never be complete.

Arjuna was a sakha to Krishna and although Krishna was the perfect Master he was a sakha too.

What are you, a shishya (disciple) or a sakha (companion)?

KNOWLEDGE SHEET [SUBJECT] : Softness And Forcefulness

Certain types of people are soft and their softness comes out of lack of courage and forcefulness. There is yet another type of softness in people and this softness comes out of maturity, magnanimity, and the knowledge of the Self.
The people who are soft out of lack of courage suffer a lot. And sometime or other they become volatile.
Similarly there are two types of forcefulness in people Ö aggression or assertiveness. Some people are forceful in an aggressive manner out of weakness, lack of strength, or out of fear. Others are forceful out of care and love, out of compassion.
David: Aggressive control and aggressive support.
Guruji: So look into yourself and become aware of what type of softness and what type of forcefulness you have.

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: Gurudev, Gurudev, the mind gets disturbed on listening to the wrong deeds being performed by saints and religious leaders. Please guide us how to handle this.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
See, there are thousands of saints and religious leaders in the country. Out of this, if two or three are found to commit wrong deeds, or if they get stuck in wrong thinking, then one should not let their own mind get troubled and become negative because of that. Whoever does something wrong will surely have to repent and pay for it. That is his Karma and he has no choice. But you should not let yourself get stuck in these things. Just take whatever good knowledge and guidance you get from anywhere or anyone.
If someone whom you regarded as a saint does something wrong and falls from such a revered position, then you should feel sympathy and compassion for them. You should not feel hatred for them, because what they did was out of ignorance and wrong knowledge. Just move on ahead.
See, Ravana (the demon king of Lanka in Ramayana) also disguised himself as an elderly sage to abduct Devi Sita, isn’t it so? So there must be some people having such a kind of thinking even today. What can one do? If Ravana had not disguised himself as saint then we would not have had the Ramayana today.
See, there are some miscreants in every sphere of society. These few wrongdoers bring dishonour to the entire field because of their wrong deeds.
There were a few doctors reported in the news who were stealing kidneys from the patients they operated on and were making a fortune by doing so. But does this mean that you keep thinking about this and become so fearful that you stop visiting doctors altogether? Will you be able to stay healthy?
In the same way, there are some shopkeepers who adulterate the food grains and sugar to MAKE PROFITS. They mix adulterants in milk and butter. But if you shut down all the shops because of this, then how will things work in society? If we keep doubting and mistrusting everything that happens in life, then that will not help. When we see some people who do such wrong deeds, we should feel compassion and sympathy for them. You should understand that they have strayed away from the right path.
Sometimes honest and innocent people also get falsely blamed and accused in criminal cases. For example, the Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Mathh was accused wrongly in a criminal case. The legal trials went on for nine years in the courts and after such a long period of 3500 hours, he was finally found to be innocent. But the media covered the news of his release and innocence for eight minutes only. So such unfortunate things do happen to good people, and you should consider it as their penance. You should take a lesson from these things that you should not indulge in wrong acts. Respect everyone, always take the good things about them and imbibe it in life.
All good qualities that you see in the world today come from the divine. And bad qualities or habits come from an ignorance of the divine. When one’s vision gets muddied and blurred due to wrong knowledge and ignorance, then one does such wrong things. So understand this and just relax.
I know there is one more question in the minds of you all here, i.e., whether it is one’s destiny or one’s Karma that plays a part in the lives of people. How many of you here have this question? (Many in the audience raise their hands).
Life is a combination of destiny and your self-efforts. I will explain this with a simple example. After a certain age, does your height increase? Whether it is five feet or six feet, once you have attained that height, it does not grow any more. So your height is like your destiny. And your weight is like your self-efforts. Whether you wish to increase your weight by 10 kilos or reduce it by 20 kilos, it is up to you. If you think that you cannot increase or decrease your weight, then that is not the right thinking. You can increase or decrease your weight, and that is the free will you have.
Destiny is knowing that you cannot increase your height beyond what it is after a certain age.
See, if it is raining outside, then that is destiny. But whether to get wet or not is your choice. It is your self-effort. If you take an umbrella and walk, then you will not get wet in the rain, otherwise you will get drenched. Being on the spiritual path means to enhance both your destiny and the quality of your self-effort.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar shared is thoughts on this occasion

"A happy Christmas and a very happy New Year to Everyone! Happy Eid Milad also. You have heard the wisdom of so many of our guests and wise people of the planet, You know if God had willed that everybody should be the same, he would have made everybody the same. He loves diversity. If God did not like diversity, he would have only made potatoes and told everybody to eat potatoes all their life! But He made so many vegetables, so types of flowers, so many types of people. Yet, we all are one at a deeper level, one love, one human race, one human being. Yet we must celebrate the diversity. You know, I never liked this word ‘tolerate’ too much. Because you tolerate something which you don’t like. I thought we should shift from tolerance to celebration! Celebrating diversity. We all live in our little communities. What is happening in this world is that people live in isolated communities.. We have to break these walls. We have to come together.. Life is there to love and celebrate. This message we have to take out to the world where we find this is lacking. This is our responsibility. We all should do this..  We have had Eid-e-Milad celebrations at this very place, we have celebrated Diwali at Archbishops place. Celebrate each other’s functions.. put into action in our day to day life, that we are all part of a one world family. So smile more and serve more. And bring a smile on the faces of all those people who are in pain, who are suffering, who are angry or jealous. We have to get them out of the negativity that they are in. On this occasion I also congratulate our volunteers who are working in Iraq today. I know it is a very, very tough Christmas for the Christian community in Erbil, whom I visited last month. They have lost their homes, they have lost their dear ones, they are all in camps with very little to hold on to. And let’s all pray and wish peace for them a celebration. I know they can’t celebrate but still we would like to tell them, look the world has still hope. There is still humanity alive and you are not alone in your problem, in your suffering. We are all with you. And know that there is a bright future and hope for the community of several thousand Christians who are languishing gin camps in Erbil and other places. My heart goes out to them and their kids they had celebrated Christmas last year happily in their churches and their homes.. I’m sure they will be able to go back to their home in the future. And i urge the international community to please come forward and put an end to this malaise of violence and terrorism through whatever means we can. Dialogue should never be stopped; I feel that dialogue should continue. And religious and political leaders here and people in the NGO sector, take a resolution today to see how we can spread broth

SRI SRI AT SATSANG

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji in Satsang  (17-Dec-2014) at Bangalore Ashram.

#SriSri addresses the Pakistani families who lost their children in the recent terror attacks: Our prayers are with them.. What to say to them? We can only tell them that humanity is still alive, please don’t  lose faith in humanity. We are all with you.  We share your grief and we are here to share your challenges. And we all need to unitedly need to fight against terrorism, fight against this inhumane tendencies.

Ques: Can we bring about a change in the mindsets of terrorists through our meditation and spiritual practices?
#SriSri: Yes this sort of thing has happened.. You must have heard the story of Angulimala who was there at the time of Buddha. He was the biggest terrorist. He had killed 999 people and cut off their finger. He was on the lookout for the thousandth finger when he came in front of Buddha. Budhha is the embodiment of love, compassion and meditation. The moment he came in front of Buddha, his mind transformed. You cannot change minds only through weapons. You cannot silence a gun with a gun. You can do it only through dialogue, compassion and understanding. That is why it is called soft power.. I always say, you lock up all these people in jails and you are all volunteers, you should go and talk to them and see how their minds change... We put aside such a big budget for defence. If even one percent of this is utilized for peace education, teach every person how to control their anger, how to handle your own mind, then this can bring about a big change. We have seen this transformation in lakhs of people already. So this is necessary. Even in Nepal, so many Maoists came back from their violent ways. You had a given a call to them, ‘From bullet to ballot’(addressing the Nepalis in the gathering). It was successful right? So this sort of work has to be increased. Go to the villages and bring people from bullet to ballot. Urge them not to take up guns, but forge relationships.. And see to it that children do not play violent video games. Because they play it as a game but then in real it removes any hesitation to handle guns. They anyway do the same thing the whole day in the video games, so they don’t think of it as something as something wrong that they are doing. They don’t understand the differences between the real world and the virtual world. To end the violence amongst children, which is increasing in the world, these violent video games have to end. When we were children, well I am still a child (laugheter), we used to listen to stories of Mahatma Gandhi that the one who used to make the most supreme sacrifice used to be the hero. Those who had forbearance were heroes. There was pride in smiling even when you were slapped. The ego was attached with non-violence. Now what has happened is, pride has got attached with violence. In classrooms the one who pushes people around is considered to be a hero. When I was in school and someone would get angry, we would look at them as if there was something wrong with them! We used to look down upon him, because he had lost his balance. Today when we switch on the television, we see that those who have lost their balance, those who are shouting in anger and beating up others, fame is attached to them. This has to be changed. There should be pride attached to those who smile more. How much endurance one has, that he smiles even after being abused, this is considered to be skilful.. today someone says something and we are ready to take up arms. This is not right. We need to change this value system, the principles of life. Focus more on the values of life.

Ques: Why are we not teaching Yoga and meditation in schools?
#SriSri: Now the Government has officially introduced it in the schools. It has been seen that this reduces violence, increases the brain power. One of the latest researchs in New York University show that if a person practices meditation regularly for two months, then the grey matter in his brain increases and the mental structure itself is transformed.

Ques: What can we do to contain terrorist activities?
#SriSri: We should not restrict ourselves to our own communities. We should live together, participate in each other’s festivals. In this way, when we build personal relationships then the possibility of such activities will reduce. Such activities take place in isolation. And keep this question with you and think about it from time to time, as to how to build relationships, eradicate terrorism.

Ques: Who am i?
#SriSri:  This is a very good question. Sit in silence and keep asking this to yourself. Bit by bit the answer will start revealing itself to you.

Ques: How can we get the ability to take quick decisions?
#SriSri: Choice is not between good and bad. The choice is always between better and best. If there are two glasses kept in front of you, one with sand and one with water, there is no choice between sand and water. There is a choice between water and juice! I tell you, both are good. Water is as good as juice. The clarity in mind comes when your intentions are correct. That’s why I say, purity in heart, clarity in mind, sincerity in action is what follows.

Ques: Why do we have so many questions?
#SriSri: It’s good to have questions and good to ask questions. You must ask questions. Questions indicate that your intellect is active and alive. Whatever knowledge from whomsoever you get, you take it but you should think about it. Ask questions and only when your intellect is satisfied, then you can move on, beyond the intellect into the realm of experience. So it is good to have questions. But sometimes you must change the questions into wonder. The difference between question and wonder is that, in questions you are looking for an answer, in wonder you are simply amazed. And the amazement is the preface for union with Divinity. That’s what is called Yoga. Yoga means uniting with the cosmos. For that the preface is wonder. So life is a journey from an ‘I don’t know’ (in a frustrated tone), to an ‘I don’t know!’(in a wonder filled tone).. From question to wonder is the journey of human life.

Ques: Why do we repeat our mistakes?
#SriSri: We keep repeating our mistakes because we think there is some pleasure in it. The intellect says this is wrong, but the mind says I am enjoying it. There are three ways to get out of it – through love, through fear or through greed. Suppose you smoke cigarettes and someone says they will give you 10 lakhs if you don’t smoke for a month, you will not smoke for 40 days! So greed will make you get out of it. Then fear is another way. If the doctor says your lung will collapse if you smoke another packet, you will not touch it. Third is you promise to the ones you love. You say, ‘Gurudev, I promise in front of you that I will not smoke again’ or you say that in front of your parents. Then you will be on the right path.

Ques: For enlightenment is necessary that someone will take you to it or can you make it on your own?
#SriSri: Don’t worry about enlightenment. First see to it that you are free from stress, free from negativity. Second, start serving people. Enlightenment is a natural phenomenon, it is your very nature. Just being like a child again is enlightenment. For that, all you need to do are two things – smile and serve!

SRI SRI AT SATSANG

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Satsang today

Ques: I have an analytical mind and I find it difficult to open up to people in fact it I was hesitating to even ask you this question today! How do I get out of this?
#SriSri: Now you are already out of it right? You are standing in front of me and asking me your question! Where is the hesitation? If there was hesitation then you still would have been stuck there. Have faith in the innocence of the present moment. Whatever we have been in the past, that we hesitate, we are like this or that, this knowledge comes to us when we are out of that. You were sleeping. When does this knowledge come to you? The moment you wake up! I am always judging people, this knowledge comes to you when you are come out of judgement. If you are stuck in judgments then you feel that, that is the truth. So the moment you get out of the analytical mind, that’s when you realize that ‘oh, I was stuck, I was judgmental’. So when you feel that you have gone too much into judgments and analysis, practice a bit of music and meditation.
Ques: You are always connected to us. But from our side sometimes the connection becomes less, sometimes more. How to fix this?
#SriSri: It seems like that. Know that it is an illusion! Connection is always there. It only seems like it is less sometimes. Only when you are troubled then you feel that way, right? It is just a matter of time.
Ques: I don’t find the strength to do Puja (worship). Please give me the strength.
#SriSri: Listen, Puja is in your every breath. It is in remembering. What is the meaning of Puja? That which comes out of fullness. When your heart fills up, that is Puja. Wherever you are, just feel grateful and that is Puja. Don’t think that God is pleased by just offering flowers and coconut etc. And you should definitely not do all this to please God. Know that meditation is the best form of Puja.
Ques: How to be infinity?
#SriSri: You are already infinity. Don’t try to be infinity.
Ques: What is the effect of Rudram and why is it that women cannot chant it?
#SriSri: Women can chant it, no problem. Somewhere in the middle ages, men were so dominating and they knew women can become much more powerful if women can chant mantras, so they robbed them of all their rights. There is nothing that women cannot do. Rudram is a very ancient chant and it has such an impact on the atmosphere. So much has been sung about Rudram.
Ques: Do you feel the longing to meet us as we do to meet you?
#SriSri: But I keep meeting all of you. I am never apart. Longing itself is God.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Satsang today

There is a beautiful story in the Upanishads. A child asks his father what God is. The father takes the son out of their home and asks him,”What was here before the building was here?” He said “space”. “Where is the building standing now?”, he said “in the space”. Then he asked, “when the building is erased, what will remain?”. He said that is what is God. God is like the space in which everything is there. You can never go out of God, even if you want to. Can anything go out of space? Impossible! Srimad Bhagavatam starts with the words, from which the birth, sustenance and dissolution happens, in which awareness dawns, from the ancient times, great men found the music, the songs, the feeling of love. The sun of love shone in the hearts of many poets of the ancient times... into that ocean of wisdom, into that ocean of love, into that ocean of abundance and brilliance, may my mind, my intellect blossom. Usually people say faith means keep aside your intellect, don’t ask questions. No, that is not the ancient way, that is not the vedic way. Ask questions, keep your rationale alive. Doubt as much as you can. But the truth withstands all your doubt and your questions. That which takes you beyond that limited horizon of thinking, “Satyam Param Dhimahi”, let my intellect be soaked in the transcendental truth. So Bhagavatam begins with “Satyam Param Dhimahi” and ends also with “Satyam Param Dhimahi”.. So glorifying intellect at the same time glorifying emotions, enriching them is what it is. And if children are exposed to such a vast reservoir of knowledge, there is very little chance that they will become fanatics and take guns and start shooting people. And think that if they shoot and rape people and think that they will go to heaven. This stupidity will end in the world.
Ques: Do I have to be enlightened? Can’t I just be?
#SriSri: Just being is enlightenment. Getting rid of all the worry, tension, extra load, cravings and aversions that you carry, is what enlightenment is. It is freedom, total freedom, total fulfilment, total satisfaction, absolute comfort. That is what s enlightenment.
Ques: Goddess Lakshmi’s cohort is an ‘Ullu’ (Owl). Can wealth be found only with ‘ullus’?
#SriSri: Yes She sometimes comes on an ‘ullu’ but doesn’t keep sitting on it. She actually sits on a lutos and sometimes arrives on an ‘ullu’. We understand ‘ullu’ as a fool, one without intelligence but in many countries ‘ullu’ is used for a wise person - as wise as an owl. So there are different interpretations.
Ques: In the Gita it is said when worldly person sleeps, the knowledgeable one is awake and when the knowledgeable person sleeps the worldly person awakens. Do they live in different time zones?
#SriSri: They live in different dimensions, in different state of mind.
Ques: Is devotion incomplete without knowledge?
#SriSri: That is true. Devotion transforms into bliss with knowledge. Else without knowledge, there is a lot of pain in devotion.
Ques: Evil is increasing in society. Is the law the only answer?
#SriSri: Only the law is not enough. You have to work with awareness. Till the time the society does not embrace knowledge and meditation, and there is a wave of spirituality, till then the transformation will not happen.
Ques: If we want a certain impact on our chakras, should we listen to particular music?
#SriSri: Looks like you have a lot of time on your hands, to see what is happening in your chakras! Get out and do some work. ‘Chakron ke chakkaron ko chhodo’(get out of the trap of chakras)! You just keep moving ahead, they will take care of themselves. Everything changes every moment. You can’t change it with effort. Surrender and relax!
Ques: At the end of meditation you say the shloka “sham no astu dvipade sham chatuspade”. What does it mean?
#SriSri: Let good happen to all, to humans or two-legged animals as well as four-legged animals and birds. Let there be peace for all.
Ques: Lord Subramanyam’s cohort is a peacock. Being a warrior it doesn’t seem logical. What does it mean?
#SriSri: If you want to understand the symbols of the Puranas, you should dig deeper. When you do that, you will find only one essence that, that opposites are complementary. That is the essence. You will see it in the symbols. A snake and a peacock are enemies, but understanding the oneness at their core, is the power of spirituality. Taking opposites together and moving forward is a Divine quality. Shiva’s cohort is a bull and Parvati’s is a tiger. Bulls and tigers are enemies. Yet Shiva and Parvati co-exist.. So you should go into the depth of the symbols and understand it’s essence that the whole creation is made of One thing and belongs to the One.
Ques: If God resides in everyone’s heart then why is it necessary to spend and build temples? Is it necessary to visit temples to worship God?
#SriSri: Not necessary. Temples are not just a place of worship, they are cultural centers. You don’t need to dismiss them, but you don’t need to go to a temple in order to feel grateful or prayerful in your life. See you can eat food anywhere, but you still have a dining table where you sit and eat.. you can meditate anywhere but when you sit in a meditation hall, it has it’s value. You don’t need more temples. There are enough temples. In fact your body is a temple. Keep your body, clean and healthy. And sit and meditate. Knowledge is the lamp that you have to light in this temple. But in the same breath I would say, take children to temples. It is good for them. Otherwise if you don’t have any symbolism etc then that orientation doesn’t come in them. For young people’s sake who have not yet understood the high philosophy, these are essential.
Ques: There are many very scary looking images outside temples. Does God reside in them?
#SriSri: Yes, yes, God resides in everything. You should look into the rooms of children these days. There are such scary posters put up!
Ques: There are talks to make Gita the national book. What are your views on it?
#SriSri: What is the need to make it when it is already an international book. It is not just limited to India, it is a universal book. It talks about Yoga, way of life. It should be an international book not necessarily a national book.
Ques: How can I come closer to you?
You should simple know that I am close to you and you are close to me. Everybody is close to me. Keep spreading smiles, keep spreading happiness, don’t hate anybody. Then you are close to me. And you do it. Every one of us has all the beautiful qualities. You don’t have to borrow the qualities from anywhere. You have it. You simply have to come and relax. Distortions are removed in relaxation. And how to you get relaxation? Through inaction and dropping desires. If you have desires in the mind then you can’t relax.. you get relaxation through knowledge. And how do you get knowledge? Through dispassion.
Ques: Could you please talk a little bit on the Gayatri mantra?
#SriSri: Gayatri mantra is the collective mantra, that says “Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat”, may the Divinity purify me and inspire my intellect. Because my life is run by my thoughts, my thoughts come in my intellect and let the Divinity inspired by my intellect. Let my intellect be soaked in the purity and Divinity and be able to perceive the Divine way. This is the whole essence of Gayatri mantra. It is one of the best prayers. Instead of asking God, God give me bread, butter and do this and that.. it is simply saying, may my mind be soaked in the light, the Divinity and all our thoughts, not just mine, ALL our thoughts be inspired. Isn’t it beautiful? If all our thoughts are inspired to do good in society, what more do you want?
Ques: You spoke about five types of sleep. Do you also see dreams in your sleep?
#SriSri: My dream for the world is One World Family. A world free from violence, a world free from stress, a world which has no corruption. And I would like everyone one of you to share my dream of a very spiritual and divine society. Where there is peace, where there is joy, there is love, compassion and where there is service.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Satsang today

"The consciousness is like the ocean. The mind is like a wave. Consciousness and the mind are not different. The mind is just a wave in the consciousness. Mind is made up of thoughts. Thoughts keep coming up in the mind. The brain is like a frequency analyzer. Consciousness consists of the three state of sleeping, waking and dreaming. There is a fourth state that can be attained through meditation. Where you are neither sleeping nor awake. . Our consciousness is amazing! The more you study about it, the more amazed you will be. And the more you learn about it, the more you will realize how little you know."
"There are many different sorts of people in this world with different thinking. Some accept some type of people, other’s accept another. I accept all!"
"We should know how to criticize and we should have the strength to take criticism.. the sign of a strong person is that he has the ability to listen and take criticism and not run away from it."
Ques: If there is an argument between and God and a devotee and they both get stuck to their points, who wins?
‪#‎SriSri‬: A devotee always wins.
Ques: Please help in reducing the plight of the Dalits.
#SriSri: Absolutely. We have to educate everyone with regard to Dalits. You know there have been about a thousand Rishis (sages), out whom a lot of them were from the Dalit caste. The two holy books, Ramayan and Mahabharata, are both written by Dalits. And the Dalits are the basis of the Hindu religion. Most of the books written were all written by them. Even Lord Shiva is said to be a Dalit. The different castes are on the basis of occupation, not by birth. And all are the same. The legs of the society are the labour class. Without them the society will not move forward. The legs are not unworthy. It is because of the them that the society progresses. That is why you should never look down upon the labour class, you should give them due respect. When you do puja, then do you first worship the feet or the head? The feet, right? In India and Nepal we first bow down and touch the feet! So this untouchability should be eradicated at its root. The practice of untouchability I think is mainly in the villages, not in the villages. Whatever is left of this practice in the villages, should be completely eradicated. There are two very important tasks that need to be undertaken. One is untouchability. Will everyone take a Sankalpa (intention) to remove it? Go to the villages and educate people. The second is ending the tradition of animal sacrifice. So many animals are being slaughtered. Nowhere in the Vedas and scriptures, has there been any sanction given to this practice. We have to remove this sort of a superstition. This is a problem in both India and Nepal. How many will work on this? (Many raise their hands). Go to every home and educate them. Tell them that all of humanity is one. What have we been always saying? Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (one world family). The whole world is one family.
Ques:Why did Rama ask Sita to go through the Agni Pariksha (test through fire)?
#SriSri: Listen I am not Rama’s lawyer.. Instead of this we should think about what we have to do in society. If we sit to find fault, we will find fault in everything. What we have to focus on is how to bring about progress in society. And how to bring together the hearts and minds of the people. This is what we have to focus on!
Ques: If God is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, then Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Jesus, who are all of them?
#SriSri: Yes God is only one. But God’s different qualities and attributes are displayed in different forms. Like how a ray of sunlight is only white in colour but when you see it through a prism you see seven different colours. So in this way the different qualities and attributes are represented in the different names of the Gods. That is why Jesus said that everything is Light, Love and Life. So God is also Light, Love and the Universal Life.. Ram and Krishna were historic personalities while Lord Ganesha etc are Gods in the subtle level of existence. So here we have two things. One is the Parmatama, the one God and then the Devatas who are parts of the one Parmatama.
Ques: When innocents get killed in riots or terrorist attacks, is it because of their past karmas? How do we explain this?
#SriSri: What is the need to explain and understand? Do what you can.. An eye for eye, tooth for tooth will not do. What has happened has happened, it is the past. What can you do now? You see a victim inside a culprit. The opportunities that you have got to learn, they have not got it. They have either not got education or have got wrong education. Broaden your vision then inside every culprit you will see a victim. That’s why they are put in prison.. you go to any prison and then you will see how they regret what they did.. There are only two causes for violence. One is wrong indoctrination. Someone tells you, you kill people then you will go to heaven, there you will lot of pleasures. This is something that instigates people to kill. The other one is because they have scars or wounds, broken families, they have such anger and stress inside their hearts, that makes them blind. I want to ask you that when you are overcome with anger, don’t you regret what you say then? Whatever you do in stress and when tensed, don’t you regret it later? So tension, stress and ignorance is the cause of all the violence in the world.. If the Taliban people had a little broader education on human values, they had been taught on compassion, non-violence, love, you think they would have done what they did today? Impossible! Because they lacked education, all that they knew and learnt is one-sided, one angle, so they came to killing others.
Dr. Gunnar Stålsett, Bishop Emeritus of Oslo and Hon. President of Religions of Peace, was the honoured guest in Satsang today. He said "We have had many conferences around the world.. but it is only when I am here that I understand the strength and depth of His vision and Spirituality"
